Follow up to CBC bad news crap

Dear Ms. Sweeney,
below is a copy of my response ( CBC feedback on web site ) to the bad news you delivered on July 3rd . It is unfortunate that you did not get more into the reasons of why the fish were late , followed up with the fact that we are now enjoying fantastic fishing . It is no big deal that the fish were late by two weeks . The small communities and businesses along this river already struggle with world competition , US dollar exchange , the war in Iraq etc. etc. so we need all the help we can get . CBC is aired world wide now via the internet so our customers see it too . We can not afford to have this kind of press getting out . It seems that the only thing new makers want to air is the bad news , and in some cases like this , twisting a natural occurance that is not actually bad into something that is news worthy . In the future please consider the negative effect this kind of “news production” can have on small town people like us . Tell the whole storey , not just the portions of conversations that fit your “production “.
Respectfully yours,
Keith Wilson

On July 3rd I was approached by CBC TV to do an interview about the “late run ” of our June salmon . MSA also gave their theory on the cold water and ice pack off of the Strait of Bele Isle and how this may have affected the arrival of the June run , which sounds logical to most of us . It is not unusual to have these wild fish that travel nearly 3000 miles to get here to be late by a couple of weeks , whether it is due to cold ocean temps or some other natural occurence . The storey told by CBC came off totally negative leaving the impression with most viewers that the Miramichi has very few fish this year . They are correct in saying that the run was late but failed to report of the fantastic fishing we are enjoying now . I was clear in my portion of the story to say that we do not know if the numbers are down this year till after the season is over . It is no big deal that the fish are a little late . It is unfair that CBC passed the death judgement on the “Summer Run ” and the Miramichi’s outfitting /guide business just so they could deliver bad news . Why is CBC not here today interviewing the hundreds of anglers allong the river that are enjoying fantastic fishing ? Three rods at Wilson’s yesterday hooked over a dozen fish , one of them 15 pounds . The conditions are perefect with cool temps and more showers on the way . The Miramichi is having fantastic fishing this week .

  1. Bob Gillespie says:

    Very well said Keith,
All too often these people take a few ideas and spin them into a story that is nothing but sensationalism.

Is the CBC ready to give equal time and space to the great run of fish happening now? Maybe an apology for causing damage to the outfitters in their quest for so called “news”?

At least most of the people directly involved in the Atlantic Salmon industry are more intelligent and not swayed by this nonsense.

My guess is the Black trial had a slow day and the politicians are on a summer break…
