Thanks to organizations such as the Miramichi Salmon Association and The Atlantic Salmon Federation giant salmon like this 35 pound hen salmon taken at Dudley Pool Sept 2006 are more frequent these days .The Miramichi River is fast becoming a “big fish river” too . In the 1960’s , 70’s and 80’s the Miramichi River was predominantly a grilse river , but lucky for us , and the salmon the Canadian government finally closed down the commercial salmon fishery and imposed a mandatory hook and release law for anglers on all salmon over 25 inches . Today we are seeing the results with fish like this one being reported all up and down our river . Live release does work and we encourage anglers for the remainder of the season to adopt a total release attitude . The best eating fish are in June and July anyway so hopefully anglers who do take a few fish have had their fill by now . Please do your part to help conserve Atlantic salmon by releasing all your catch and also buying a membership in MSA and ASF .
