G’day Keith,
Before every outing, there’s a little something in every salmon fisherman’s mind that thinks this might be the day. When all the conditions come together and you’re at the right place at the right time. Of course, most days we catch less than what we hoped for–water too high, too low, too warm, too cold, fish not here yet, run already went through…. but there are certain times when all the stars are aligned.
These times create an optimism that isn’t forgotten. Neil and I had one of these days on Sunday at your place. I landed a 32 inch hen at Stanley’s pool. Neil helped me land it and then went to fish while I released it. Not 10 casts later, Neil hooked a big salmon. We landed another 31 inch hen and headed up to the top of the pool. Within 2 minutes Neil had another salmon on. Yet again we landed the fish. A nice bright 26 inch salmon.
This all happened between 1 and 4 in the afternoon. At this point we were just baffled and decided the pool should have a rest so we headed to cold water pool for the evening. We each rolled a fish and then Neil hooked another! We landed and released a nice bright grilse. Soon after, I hooked a salmon and lost it, then rolled another just before dark. When it was time to leave, we looked at each other and didn’t have to say anything, we knew it was one of those days.
We’d like to thank you very much for having us on your waters. It is a beautiful stretch of river and one that I’d like to see again soon. Thanks a lot
for being so accomodating and letting us change dates because of the high water.
Take care Keith and good luck the rest of the season!
Nathan & Neil
