As we enter into the fourth week of July it is still hard to believe the great water conditions and cool weather . We have had three nice rises in the last ten days , thus keeping the fish moving well but not taking so well . It is common to roll a fish once and then he is gone , up over the bar and heading up the river . The fish do not seem to be pooling up at all at this point , but you will never hear me complain when there is good water and cool temps , even if it means these “June run” fish motor right through . Up till a few days ago we were still seeing MSW salmon which makes us think that the “July Run ” of grilse is not in McNamee yet . The Millerton counting fence in the estuary is reporting seeing more male grilse now , which is typical of our mid July run . With this superb water , fair to good angling should continue . It is interesting to note also that we are still having good trout fishing in the river , normally all the trout are up in the cold water bogans by now . Rob B. landed a big 2.5 pounder this week , his biggest trout ever . This is not the Cains I am referring to , this is on the main river here in McNamee .
Folks , make room in your fly box , I hate to say it but I just discovered there is another variation of the Buck Bug , it is the “Yellow Machine w/ white calf tail ” , Johnie reported guys in Blackville having great luck on this thing . Question remains , is it the color of the fly or is it the shape , yellow is not at all like dark green , but the fly is the exact same shape .Regardless , I now have a half dozen “Yellow Machines ” in my fly box .
