My friends down stream near the esturary are finally reporting fresh- run salmon in their pools and on the line . George C. hooked and lost a huge 30 pound plus hen this morning and a fishing buddy of his also hooked but lost a nice 12 pound salmon . These large fish are typical of the early run and will be followed by what is predicted by our DFO biologists as “the year for a big run of grilse” . DFO is also reporting near record numbers of smolt returing to the sea over the last couple of weeks . This of course boads well for the future . The river conditions are perfect and this cool wet weather is forecast to hold a couple more days , as well as cooler air temps till at least mid next week . It is time to dig out your green machine with a white calf tail , I landed my first salmon in mid June of 2006 and did not stop using this pattern until I had landed 37 grilse and salmon . You can guess what fly I have tied on today .
